Been busy brewing away over here. Batch #3 just went to ferment early this afternoon. Little preview of what is in store when our doors open...

Batch #1 - Dark English Mild - Traditional Dark Mild brewed with Maris Otter, Brown, Amber, Black Patent malt and a bit of Chocolate Rye.

Batch #2 - Saison - Saison brewed with Gambrinus Pils and Wheat. Dry-hopped with a healthy dose of Saaz. Fermented with Jovaru, a yeast strain used by the famed Lithuanian Farmhouse brewery with the same name.

Batch #3 - Grisette - Tart Saison brewed with Pilsner malt, Montana Craft Malt Wheat, Flaked Oats and Vienna. Dry-hopped with Amarillo.

There are so many rewarding aspects of being in the craft malt industry, but few more than being part of a brewery’s R&D process; helping to build the most delicious beers with our Montana-grown and malted grains.

This is especially true on the rare occasion when a new brewery gets things rolling!

Ultimately, our primary goal is to ensure that our customers have both the ingredients AND information needed to make the best possible beers with the highest quality ingredients.

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!

The song, “America the Beautiful," was based on a poem written by the professor, poet, and writer, Katharine Lee Bates, during an 1893 trip to Colorado Springs, Colorado. When she got to the top of Pike’s Peak, the view was so beautiful that it inspired her to write, "All the wonder of America seemed displayed there, with the sea-like expanse."

The poem that Bates wrote first appeared in print in The Congregationalist, a weekly journal, on July 4, 1895. Within a few months, it was set to music by Silas G. Pratt. Bates revised the song in 1904, after receiving many requests to use the song in publications and special services. An additional change was made to the wording of the third verse in 1913 to give us the version we know today. The song is considered by some to be the country’s unofficial national anthem.

(And while we love the whole song, we’re big fans of the 2nd line in particular)
